Children’s wisdom teeth are usually removed in their late teens. These large molars are the last adult teeth to grow in. In many cases, there isn’t enough room for the wisdom teeth to emerge properly and they begin to impact the other molars or they become misaligned. When this happens, the wisdom teeth are surgically removed.
During your teen’s regular dental exams, we actively monitor how their wisdom teeth are developing. At times, wisdom teeth can grow in a direction that could put other teeth at risk. If this happens, we will usually recommend having them extracted.
Typically, we strive to remove wisdom teeth before they emerge from your gums. In this case, we remove the teeth surgically by making an incision in the gums. We use local anesthetic and sedation. The incisions are closed with sutures, which may dissolve on their own as the gum tissue heals.
You may experience swelling and pain after your surgery. We’ll provide you with advice on how you can care for your mouth while the incisions heal. We may also provide you with a prescription for pain medication to help with discomfort.
Contact our office if you have any questions about wisdom teeth removal or to book an examination.
